Working alongside world-leading defence scientists in our Integrated Engineering Services division we offer multi-disciplinary professional engineering services supported by in-house manufacturing capabilities, to solve challenging engineering problems for our Defence Science and Technology clients.About the roleUnder general direction to the approach, and with guidance in terms of specific priorities and requirements, carry out fabrication and assembly of precision prototype mechanical components as required by the High Speed Weapons (HSW) Program. The successful candidate will work closely with design engineers, including some at interstate locations, and must be able to communicate complex mechanical concepts using information technology such as email and video teleconferencing. Substantial experience in precision CNC and manual machining, and the usage of CAD/CAM tools will underpin success in this role. The role will deliver specialist mechanical technical support and a manufacturing capability to the world-class Hypersonic Research Precinct at DST Eagle Farm.The role is Brisbane based and will report to the Leader Hypersonics Engineering.Duties:CNC and manual milling and turning tasks to support the manufacture and modification of flight and ground test hardware systems/components.Assist with, and lead when required, the assembly of complex flight and ground test hardware assemblies and systems.Usage of CAD/CAM packages to support manufacturing and assembly activities.General mechanical support to the X3/R Hypersonic Wind Tunnel operational readiness and experimental activities, including daily associated manual handling tasks.Assist with, and lead when required, the environmental ground-based test and evaluation activities and associated reporting for mechanical and pneumatic systems and sub-systems.Carry out procurement of hardware and consumables as required.Essential experience/skills/qualities:Substantial experience in the operation and programming of CNC mills.Substantial experience in performing precision machining of parts with manual mills and lathes.Substantial experience with CAD/CAM packages e.g. MasterCAM or SolidCAM or equivalent.Experience with high pressure gas vessels and associated fittings.Ability to operate modern office software applications.Ability to obtain a forklift license.Ability to obtain and maintain a minimum NV1 Defence Security Clearance.Desirable experience/skills/qualities:Previous experience in a mechanical technician role within a research and development setting.Experience performing technical test and evaluation tasks.An understanding of hypersonic, shock tunnel or scramjet technologies.Ability to undertake basic procurement/ordering tasks.High risk work licenses e.g. dogging, elevated work platform, overhead crane)An existing NV1 (or above) Defence Security Clearance.Applications close on Tuesday 10th December 2019.What we offerWithout the collective smarts of our people, we would not be able to achieve what we do.
